Ready to Roll
Jayne Bannister’s life revolves around three main things.
Number one: Ice dancing with her brother Chris, which is foisted upon them by their overbearing mother.
Number two: Secret figure skating lessons with her best friend Tara, whose company she adores (maybe a little more than she should).
And number three: trying to make sure nobody finds out she’s a lesbian.
Growing up in a working-class family in a tiny village in Yorkshire, Jayne Bannister doesn’t see much beyond her own backyard, and she doesn’t exactly have the highest hopes that she’ll live her dream of becoming a figure skater. Still, that doesn’t stop her from spending her Sunday afternoons at the lake with Tara, learning the skills she knows she’ll probably never use. But when a stroke of fortune leads her family from the bitter cold of Northern England to the sun-soaked shores of Bondi in Sydney, Australia, Jayne realises that this could be her chance to reinvent herself.
But reinventing oneself is tricky, especially when a religious upbringing has caused you to believe that an incredibly fundamental part of you is wrong. And especially when you live with parents who you know won’t accept you for who you are. But when Jayne meets a blue-haired roller derby girl named Rhi, who shows her all the things she’s been missing from her life, it kicks off a chain of events that lead her right to where she needs to be.
Discover how a shy ice dancer named Jayne became the freeskating champion and all-around icon, Jaz Bannister, in this prequel to the Randwick Ravens Series.
